What Does the Research Say?
Hypnosis is a very effective tool/intervention for many things. Often it can be used as a first line of defense instead of a last resort. Here are a few examples that demonstrate the effectiveness of Hypnosis.
Smoking Cessation: One study reported that 81% Quit smoking with hypnosis, and the majority of those who quit remained smoke-free a year later.
Another study reported that while many people who try to stop smoking on their own crash and backslide after a week or two, 90.7% of those who were hypnotized were still smoke-free during checkpoints ranging from six months to three years later.
Another study reported that after a two-year period, the hypnosis group was twice as likely to have remained free of cigarettes, and hypnosis was proven to be “an effective intervention for long‐term smoking cessation and abstinence in adult smokers.”
Weight Loss: Hypnosis helped people lose weight in both the short-term and in the long-term. In other words, hypnosis helps people keep from regaining weight!
Hypnosis controls pain! Hypnosis has direct effects on many suprasinal sites involved in the experience of pain.
Irritable Bowel Syndrome: The hypnosis patients showed a dramatic improvement in all features, the difference between the two groups being highly significant. In the hypnosis group no relapses were recorded during the 3-month follow-up period, and no substitution symptoms were observed.
The Veterans Association reports that Clinical Hypnosis is one of the evidence-based complementary and integrative health (CIH) approaches covered by the Veterans medical benefits package when deemed clinically necessary by their care team per VHA Directive 1137 – Provision of Complementary and Integrative Health, published in May 2017. Based on literature review these approaches were found to be safe and have sufficient evidence of benefit to be recommended as appropriate components of care for the Veteran population. Conditions with evidence of positive effect include: anxiety disorders, anxiety related to medical procedures, insomnia, Irritable Bowel Syndrome. High-confidence evidence that clinical hypnosis is effective for anxiety in cancer patients, breast cancer care, obesity and weight loss. A summary of double-blind studies suggests Clinical Hypnosis as a tool to consider as possible efficacious or better for additional areas: pain management, headache and migraine, asthma, sleep disorders, depression, dermatological conditions, anxiety, procedural pain and anxiety, and other areas.
